Today we launched at 08.30 from Kleinbaai harbor. We went to Wilfred’s Rock and had to wait a little bit for our first shark to show up. The first shark to pass our boat was Tiger, an impressive 4.5m male. Unfortunately he didn’t stick around very long. Our next sighting came as a surprise; it was two Southern Right whales passing through Shark Alley! These are the first Southern Right whales we have spotted from Slashfin this year, hopefully more will come over the next few weeks. Southern Right whales migrate from Sub-Antarctic waters to warmer waters during winter for two reasons. They come here for mating and for nurturing their calves. The whale season runs from June till December so these months are perfect for joining our sister company Dyer Island Cruises to watch the Southern Rights from up close! After the Southern Right whales passed we spotted 3 more sharks and they stayed around for a bit but unfortunately they left after a while and we didn’t spot any sharks for some time. We decided it was time to move to see if we could spot some sharks in another area. We made our way through Shark Alley to watch the Cape Fur seals and we got on anchor at the Geldsteen. As soon as we got there we spotted new sharks and some of these sharks were quite active showing some partial breaches. We ended up seeing 7 different sharks varying from 2.4m to 4.2m in length. Everyone managed to see the sharks up close and personal and on our way back we had more surprises waiting for us. We spotted a group of 4 penguins, swimming in the shallows. But that was not the only surprise. Just before we got into the harbor we spotted a group of about 20 Bottlenose Dolphins! We only realized we saw the Marine big 5 after we got back on land, how lucky!
